Steven Bash was born in Compton California. His family moved to Riverside County and started one of the largest nursery schools in southern California. His father was an artist, and art was a major part of Steven’s life when he was growing up. He in turn makes sure that his son Forest is exposed to art, and many TEAA members have met his son at Trail’s End classes.
Although starting out in pre-med, Steven switched to art. He studied under James Turrell, whose retrospective will be shown at the Guggenheim in 2012, and Ed Beardsely among others. He received a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from University of California at Riverside with emphasis in Microbiology and Invertebrate Zoology, Chemistry, Art and Photography.
The combination of his educational background and love of nature can be seen in his work. He describes his work as photo collage mosaics or vertical mandalas that are a refuge for peace, like looking into a fire. When asked what sparks his art, he said, “All those years as a scientist and travel and my interest in nature left me with a reverence for life and nature that sparks my art.”
Steven’s photograph to the left was chosen as this month’s featured work. His other work is made by a unique process that can utilize drawings and photographs. He will be giving a demonstration of his technique at the October Artist’s Reception.
Steven has lived in Oregon for 29 years and is a licensed contractor specializing in rough and finish carpentry, cabinet work, tile, painting, formica, trim work, framing, doors, windows, decks, siding
